Additional lifeguard provision secured for Ballycastle - Cllr Cara McShane

Sinn Féin Councillor, Cara McShane, has welcomed the additional lifeguard provision for Ballycastle.

Cllr McShane had highlighted the need for more coverage at the beach to include the Easter holidays, as well as the current arrangement of Bank Holidays and July-August; and in line with the lifeguard provision at Benone Strand, West Bay, East Strand and Whiterocks.

Sinn Féin Councillor, Cara McShane, said:

"The lifeguard provision across these areas has been contracted out by the Council to the RNLI. A new 5-year contract is in the process of being agreed, so it is also a timely intervention to include and extend the current provision in Ballycastle.

"This is something I have been campaigning for in recent years and I have discussed with local residents and with Council officers on several occasions.

"With the global health pandemic, we have witnessed a huge increase in the staycation market and a surge in people accessing beaches and outdoor recreation.

"Ballycastle in-particular has been a hot-spot of activity, especially with several recent titles recognising it is one of the Best Places to Live / Visit, the popularity of the town is growing as a destination for visitors.

"I am delighted that this has now been recognised and included within the recent report to Council's Leisure and Development Committee. The decision is due to be ratified at full Council later this month."
