Celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight

1 Mins read

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is marking Fairtrade Fortnight with a visit from a Nicaraguan chocolate factory worker.

Haris Picado will be the special guest at an event in Cloonavin, which is all part of Council’s commitment to becoming a Fairtrade Borough.

He will share his experiences of the Fairtrade initiative, and the benefits it has had for him, his family and the wider community where he lives. Haris will be welcomed to the Borough by the Mayor, Alderman Maura Hickey.
She said: “I’m sure we will all learn a lot about the difference Fairtrade can make when we hear Haris’ story. As a Council we support the Fairtrade values, and we know the difference it makes around the world. Yet, not enough people are buying it and not enough farmers are benefiting from it. We need everyone in the community to get behind farmers and their families during this awareness-raising campaign.

I’m looking forward to welcoming Haris to the Borough, and I hope he is able to enjoy our beautiful attractions and scenery during his time in this part of the world.” When farmers and workers can sell on Fairtrade terms, it provides them with a better deal, an opportunity to improve their lives and plan for their future. Fairtrade offers a powerful way to reduce poverty through our everyday shopping – look out for the Fairtrade logo on products. The event in Cloonavin takes place on Thursday 9th March from 2.30pm.

It is open to the public, and anyone who is interested in attending should contact Recycling and Education Officer Declan Donnelly by emailing [email protected] or ringing 028 2766 0257
