Local SDLP Councillors participated in both the Voiceless Protest at Stormont and the Pro-life March in Belfast on Saturday.
A spokesperson for SDLP said ‘Having participated in both the Voiceless Protest at Stormont and the Pro-life March for their Lives in Belfast City centre on Saturday, we as SDLP councillors on the Causeway Coast and Glens Council, wish to congratulate the many thousands of ordinary people ,who voted with their feet to protest against the undemocratic imposition of abortion on Northern Ireland by the Westminster parliament. The passage of this Act is a clear breach of the devolution settlement under the Good Friday Agreement.
People should be aware that this new legislation is even worse than the 1967 Abortion Act in Britain. It will mean the abortion of babies right up to 28 weeks without any restrictions. All legal protections for the unborn will be removed by this Act.
The right to life, especially for the unborn, is the very foundation of human rights. To remove that protection for the unborn, is to undermine the valued culture of human rights in our society.
As SDLP councillors we will continue to support the pro-life policy of the SDLP and the pro-life movement of thousands of ordinary people that oppose this inhuman and cruel measure.’
