Portstewart : Coastguard warning after dog dies following cliff fall

HM Coleraine Coastguard has issued a warning to pet owners after a dog died following a fall from cliffs in Portstewart.

The owner also found themselves in difficulty attempting to rescue the dog which prompted a 999 call.

An HM Coastguard spokesperson said ;

"Coleraine and Ballycastle Coastguard Rope Rescue Teams were tasked today to a report that a dog had fallen off a cliff at Portstewart and the owner was in difficulty after attempting a rescue. Sadly the dog passed away but the owner was recovered safely.

"Unfortunately this type of incident happens frequently around the North Coast. Please keep your pet on a lead near cliff edges. If your dog has fallen, do not attempt a rescue yourself but call 999 COASTGUARD."
