Excessive costs of airshow impacting on Council services - Councillor Cara McShane

Sinn Féin Councillor, Cara McShane, has stated that the sum of £340,000 of ratepayers money spent on consultancy fees for the 2-day annual Airshow, is directly impacting on the Council's ability to delivery other Council-led events across Causeway Coast and Glens.

Cllr Cara McShane received the detailed costs through a Freedom of Information request. They reveal over £340,000 of ratepayers money has been spent since 2016 on consultants for this event.

Cllr McShane said:

"This is a staggering amount of money, which is largely spent on one consultant's wages for one event. This figure does not include the entire budget spent on the Airshow annually, which this year involved Council dipping into their Reserves for almost half a million pounds.

"The Council has a list of 'Signature Events' across the district, but those other events are suffering and struggling to survive due to lack of funds and resources being made available. Yet we see lavish sums of money and time spent promoting this one event.

"I don't believe this level of spending can be justified and it certainly couldn't be deemed good value for money for the ratepayers of Causeway coast and Glens council."
