A6 dualling announcement a major step forward – Ó hOisín

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has welcomed the announcement by Regional Development Minister Michelle McIlveen that the dual carriageway of the A6 from Derry to Dungiven, including the Dungiven bypass, is to proceed.

Mr Ó hOisín said,

“This is a tremendous boost for the entire North West region. The Minister has now announced she has accepted the outcomes of the public inquiry into the scheme and that it will proceed from 2017.

“Not only has the Minister confirmed the 18 miles of dual carriageway between Dungiven and Derry but she also confirmed that the Dungiven bypass may proceed independently of the construction of the rest of the roadway.

“The campaign to have the A6 transformed into a dual carriageway and the creation of a bypass at Dungiven has taken many years but we are now seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

“The dualling of the main Derry to Belfast road will be a major factor in improving the economic fortunes of the region and the bypass of Dungiven will have a major environmental impact on the town.

“I now look forward to seeing the project move to the next stage which is construction and this too will be a major boost to the local construction industry.”
