Archibald calls on public to contribute to Fire Service consultation

Sinn Féin’s Caoimhe Archibald has called upon people to contribute to the public consultation on managing Firefighter resources which is now open.

Ms Archibald said, “The consultation period opened this week and runs until 7th March 2016.

“Earlier this week we met with a representative of the Fire Brigades Union to discuss the implications of the proposals which include downgrading of Coleraine Fire Station.  In 2008 Coleraine was upgraded to its current level due to an evaluation of risk.

“The proposals would see full time weekend cover being removed and a reduction from 12 hours to 10 hours cover Monday to Friday. This would result in a reduction in the number of full time Firefighters in Coleraine and a substantial increase in the number of hours retained Firefighters would be required to commit to.

“Discussions with the FBU representative also highlighted the potential for more imaginative approaches with greater cross service collaboration. It is therefore very important all stakeholders respond to this consultation.”
