Alderman Norman Hillis has expressed severe disappointment that there will be no fireworks displays in Portrush this year. Officials have decided that the fireworks normally held in the town during the September Airshow weekend will be moved to Portstewart this year.
Commenting, Alderman Hillis said : “I am all in favour of spreading the benefits of event tourism throughout the area but I feel when the crowds are in Portrush for the airshow it is illogical to ask thousands of spectators in Portrush at the airshow to move along the already busy coast road to Portstewart to see the fireworks.
“It is about as logical as having the fireworks at the end of the hugely popular Portstewart Red Sails Festival in Portrush instead of Portstewart.
This could well end up with a massive traffic jam but time will no doubt tell. “
