Boyle welcomes Minister Farry’s new support package for postgraduate students

Alliance Minister for Employment and Learning Stephen Farry has introduced new tuition fee loans for taught postgraduate students.

Following the announcement, Yvonne Boyle, Alliance Assembly Candidate for East Londonderry,  said: ‘I welcome the Minister’s move, which follows a pubic consultation, and will see a non-means tested tuition fee loan of up to £5,500 for post graduate students from Northern Ireland from 2017.

It will allow them to extend the balance on existing undergraduate loans and will be available over a number of years for students wishing to study on a more flexible part-time basis.

During my time as as postgraduate student of social work at the University of Ulster at Coleraine, 1985-87,  I was able to get a grant. Currently, the majority of our postgraduate students cannot access any standard student support package for their tuition fees. The majority have to self fund their studies.

An expansion of postgraduate provision is a key aim of the Department’s  higher education strategy

‘Graduating  to Success’. This solution, unique in the UK, will go a long way towards achieving that vision’
