Alliance Minister for Employment and Learning Stephen Farry has introduced new tuition fee loans for taught postgraduate students.
Following the announcement, Yvonne Boyle, Alliance Assembly Candidate for East Londonderry, said: ‘I welcome the Minister’s move, which follows a pubic consultation, and will see a non-means tested tuition fee loan of up to £5,500 for post graduate students from Northern Ireland from 2017.
It will allow them to extend the balance on existing undergraduate loans and will be available over a number of years for students wishing to study on a more flexible part-time basis.
During my time as as postgraduate student of social work at the University of Ulster at Coleraine, 1985-87, I was able to get a grant. Currently, the majority of our postgraduate students cannot access any standard student support package for their tuition fees. The majority have to self fund their studies.
