The Causeway Borough of Sanctuary Group, which aims to offer welcome and support to migrants and the marginalised, has pledged their support of local efforts to bring Syrian refugees to the Borough.
Speaking after their meeting on 17th Septmber 2015, the Chair, Yvonne Boyle said:
“Our group has been looking at a strategy to support Syrian refugees locally. We recently wrote to the Assembly Executive, along with Coleraine Churches Forum Chair, Rev Bert Richie and Coleraine Multi-cultural Forum Secretary, Richard John (who are also Causeway Borough of Sanctuary Committee members) to support their proposal to bring Syrian refugees to Northern Ireland.”
“This last week we have been in touch with Causeway Councillors and David Jackson, CC&G Chief Executive. We understand the Council will discuss the matter next week.”
Yvonne Boyle, a former Coleraine Deputy Mayor, added:
“This is a humanitarian crisis and we are calling for a cross party response locally.”
“I am meeting with David Jackson,Chief Executive, in the near future and we will be offering our group’s energy and skills to be part of any network of stakeholders who wish to help.”
