Claire Sugden MLA has welcomed today’s announcement of a £17million investment for Primary Care.
The East Londonderry MLA said : “I welcome today’s announcement of a £17million investment for primary care. I have been lobbying the Minister for some time to provide much needed support. It is great to have a result.
I have met with GPs in my constituency and listened to their concerns. Primary care is facing a very challenging environment. GPs are retiring and there are few to fill their places. Locum GPs can be in short supply and there are practises which are facing closure due to the pressure they are under.
Patient numbers are through the roof and GPs are under pressure to continually provide a good service. Anyone can see the mounting pressures when they try to book an appointment.
I am also pleased that the Minister will be putting more District Nurses and Health Visitors on the ground. Many, particularly older people, in rural areas rely on these services.
This investment has been coming for some time and I very much welcome it. I know that primary care providers will too. I hope this will be part of an ongoing process to address the issues within this sector.”
