The future of Edward Street Social Centre in Ballymoney was discussed yet again at last night’s CCAG Leisure & Development Committee meeting.
The ongoing issues surrounding the ownership and future of the centre were last discussed at Full Council in March.
At that meeting the Deputy Mayor suggested that Council Officers meet with the Evergreen Club, who are currently the main operators of the building, so that a solution could be found.
At last night’s meeting, Council’s Leisure & Development Director, Richard Baker informed Councillors that a meeting had since been held with the Evergreen Club and it had been established that they are the owners of the building.
Mr Baker said that this had placed immense pressure on the Evergreen Club as the building had been run as if it were Council property, with all maintenance and running costs, including rates being paid for by Council.
He then proposed that Council continue to do this for a period of six months, so that the Evergreen Club have time to consider their options.
When asked about the possibility of Council acquiring the building, Mr Baker revealed that they had received a legal opinion which advised against it.
