UPDATE 22.04 / 23rd July

A spokesperson from Belfast Coastguard said “The search has now been stood down and Search And Rescue units returned to base following an extensive search by Coleraine & Ballycastle Coastguard Rescue Teams, Portrush RNLI lifeboats and lifeguards and Irish Coast Guard rescue helicopter.”

RNLI described the incident as a “false alarm with good intent”.

A major search operation is currently ongoing in the North Coast with involving RNLI, Coastguard and PSNI.

There are few details at this time.  The search began around 18.40 this evening following a call from a member of the public who became concerned after finding clothes on the beach.

Coleraine, Ballycastle & Belfast Coastguard teams are involved in this search operation, as well as the Irish Coastguard Helicopter from Sligo and Portrush RNLI.

Clothing, believed to belong to the swimmers has been found at Downhill / Benone. Do you recognise it?
