McCandless calls for new leisure centre in Coleraine

1 Mins read

Speaking to Causeway Coast Community, William McCandless said  “The Rugby Avenue sports complex had been planned in the Coleraine legacy council and it was an ambitious plan to upgrade and centralise sporting and leisure facilities in Coleraine.

The aim was to have the leisure facility currently situated at Railway Rd. sited at Rugby Avenue along with sports pitches to provide a sporting complex in the area.

While the programme itself was laudable and a genuine attempt to improve the sporting facilities in Coleraine, unfortunately due to lack of funding and other partners not being able to engage simultaneously the plan has not been achieved.

This would now necessitate an urgent Plan B being put into play. The current Railway Rd. site in Coleraine has seriously deteriorated and is in need of a major overhaul. One of the main areas which needs major refurbishment is the swimming pool and I receive complaints on a weekly basis concerning the state of the tiles in the pool and closures to the pool due to the repair work which is necessary to avoid H.&S. issues.

The citizens of the area deserve better. Councillors and council officers when conducting their review of leisure and sports facilities within the Borough need to re prioritise their current list of projects to bring the Railway Rd. site to the top of their agenda and discuss what can be done to provide for the residents of Coleraine and the surrounding area.”
