The DUP’s East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell has given a cautious welcome to the new beginning in Local Government when the 11 Council model started on 1st April 2015.
“While there will obviously be longer term cost saving, this needs to be fully utilised for the benefit of rate payers in each Council area.
Politically, some Nationalists have chosen to look back to Unionist majority Councils and what they were supposed to have done some fifty or sixty years ago. Many Unionists in what were (and are) Nationalist / Republican majority run Councils will be hoping that the much more recent days of Nationalist triumphalism will not be repeated. The days of riding roughshod over the wishes of Unionist minorities not only have to be over, must be seen to be over as well.
Whether in areas like Londonderry, Fermanagh, Mid Ulster or Newry, already there are signs of old style Irish Republican aggression on display. Vigilance as always must be the Unionist watchword.”
