Proposal of Hotel & Spa Complex with Conferencing Facilities bringing Major Investment for the North Coast

3 Mins read

C&V Developments Ltd have been in discussions with Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council and the organisers Mervyn Whyte MBE and Fergus McKay of the North West 200 about a significant tourism development adjacent to the start/finish line of the ever popular racing circuit on Ballyreagh Road, Portstewart.

C&V Developments pride themselves on delivering, with an eye to detail, high quality building projects both in Scotland and the north of England. Vivienne Gilholm, who originates from Portrush, together with her husband Colin who is as a keen bike enthusiast, couldn’t pass on this chance for such an innovative project and have focused on bringing this major tourist destination to the North Coast ever since.

What started as just a thought has been inspired by the industrious and entrepreneurial atmosphere of the seaside areas of Portrush and Portstewart and together with the natural draw to the area has ended with the planned application.

Commenting on their plans Vivienne Gilholm said: I am really excited about being able to work again in the area of the North Antrim coast. When coming home over the years to visit family, it’s been clear that resources are rich alive and thriving in both the industrious hardworking people and also in the outstanding natural beauty right across the area. We see this project as building on the infectious energy that has always made Portrush and Portstewart so popular and feel that this development will reflect the high standard of natural attractions and sporting events that are already here and happening – with its location and views the hotel will become a unique destination in itself. For us it is clear that the NW200 has a heartbeat driven by the dedication and hard work of the many local volunteers and we are lucky to be able to work with Mervyn and Fergus in giving it a permanent home.

Commenting on the what this means to the North West 200 Mervyn Whyte MBE said: “Coleraine & District Motor Club Ltd. as the organising body for the Vauxhall International North West 200, is delighted to be working alongside C&V Developments in realising the creation of a permanent home for this world famous road race now entering its 87th year of running.

This is a truly exciting proposition for the NW200 in developing an administration facility, exhibition space and heritage centre to ensure that all the great stories that have unfolded over the many years racing can be displayed and shared for many years to come.

I am personally very excited that this project provides the NW200 with a unique opportunity to create a constant presence at its true home on the North Coast as well as provide much needed leisure and hospitality services in the area.”

The timing of the project could not be better with the uniquely designed luxury 4* Spa Hotel with conference and banqueting facilities and cottages planned to be open just in time for the 148th Open Golf championship at Royal Portrush in 2019. Planned is a shared space that will have a contemporary twist on a traditional elegance of service which will result in a location bringing people together to inspire, meet, enjoy and celebrate special occasions.

The plans have now moved up a gear with the developers bringing in local planning consultant Tim Ferguson of Ferguson Planning and architect Ben Wilson of Wilson McMullen Architects. Pre-application discussions with the Council have taken place and Ferguson Planning recently lodged the Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) that officially starts the 12 week planning consultation process.

Commenting on what is happening Ben Wilson said: “We are very excited to be working closely with C&V Developments and the organisers of the North West 200 organisation, on such a prestigious and important landmark project for the North Coast.

As someone who has grown up on the dramatic North coast and now returned to live and work here permanently, it is very rewarding to be offered the opportunity to create a significant piece of architecture so close to home. The unique nature of this project and its importance in giving this internationally renowned event, a long awaited permanent home within its natural base, is an exciting and invigorating prospect. One that we will approach from both a professional and personal perspective and dedication, to ensure a positive and exciting design for a truly remarkable location and coastline.

Commenting on the submission Tim Ferguson said: The proposal is simply unique not only in terms of its location and connection with the North West 200 but also in terms of its design and desire to provide a legacy for the event. At the same time, it will go one step further in providing a 4* Hotel and Spa Complex that has long been demanded by locals, businesses and visitors alike.

The submission of the PAN notice shows the developers intent to work as fast as they can to make it a reality. Prior to lodging the planning application, we are very keen for people to come and view the proposals and provide their thoughts on the development. A further announcement on the consultation event will be made shortly with it expected to take place around the middle of June.

We have worked with C&V developments for some time now and their developments are of the highest standard. We are all extremely excited about this project and the opportunity it provides for delivering significant economic investment and employment right along the North Coast.”
