Rare orchid found at Giants Causeway

1 Mins read

A Platanthera chlorantha, commonly known as the Greater Butterfly-Orchid, has been spotted at the Giant’s Causeway for the first time in six years.

In a social media post, National Trust Area Ranger, Dr Cliff Henry explained: ‘Pete Mellor was carrying out a butterfly transect for us at Innisfree when he spotted this very uncommon orchid in a field about 50 metres from the visitor centre.

‘This beautiful orchid can be found throughout Europe and Morocco but only three have ever been spotted at the Causeway before, the last one was in 2009.’
