Claire Sugden MLA has expressed concern over the revised opening hours for Libraries in her constituency of East Londonderry.
Miss Sugden said:
“I am concerned that new library times show reduced hours across my constituency.
In May Libraries NI agreed on new opening hours to be implemented from November 2nd.
Although they have kept their promise that the cut of 7.5% to their budget would not mean the closure of any libraries, I am disappointed that those in Limavady and Dungiven have had their hours reduced.
Elsewhere, other libraries across my constituency such as in Garvagh, Kilrea and Portrush will not be opening six days a week.
Libraries have long been a focal point for communities; they offer services to schools, and access to facilities such as the internet which many people may not otherwise be able to use.
Reduced opening hours is a loss to these communities.
I urge the Executive to appreciate the service provided by these and other educational organisations at grassroots. They must start to see beyond themselves and meet the needs on the ground for the people of Northern Ireland.”
