Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said all civic and council buildings should be neutral spaces for everyone.
The East Antrim MLA said; “All civic and council buildings should be neutral and welcoming spaces for everyone, both staff and members of the public using the facilities.
“As one of the longest serving councillors on the old Moyle Council and a former chair we always worked together to keep council buildings a neutral space and the flying of the flag was never a contentious issue.
“The proposals to fly the union flag over council buildings in Ballycastle goes completely against that.
“The creation of the new council structures provided an opportunity to establish new protocols on flags and symbols in an effort to create welcoming spaces for everyone in the community.
“Unfortunately some on the Causeway Coast and Glens Council have chosen instead to engage in triumphalism by pursuing an aggressive flags policy.
“Instead of this approach we want to see civic and council buildings being neutral spaces for all.”
