Sinn Féin MLA Daithi McKay has brought forward an amendment to the Rates (Amendment) Bill that will ensure all Community Amateur Sports Clubs to benefit from 100% rate relief on facilities used for recreational activity. He said that rugby clubs will be more adversely affected than other clubs.
Mr McKay said,
“I welcome the fact that the Department of Finance and Personnel has adopted part of my bill and that clubs without bars will receive 100% rates relief. However rugby clubs in particular are being left behind as out of the 46 rugby clubs across the north, only two or three do not have bars.
“I am therefore bringing forward a common sense amendment that will ensure that these clubs will receive 100% relief except for the part of the club that sells alcohol.
“The money saved by the clubs can be reinvested in the facilities allowing for more people to participate in healthy recreational activities benefiting the entire community.
“This amendment will be voted for on Monday and I am calling on MLAs to stand up for Ulster rugby clubs and other amateur clubs and support this amendment.”
