DUP MLA Mervyn Storey has condemned the attack on a man and woman in their 70s who were tied up and threatened by armed and masked burglers who broke into their home in the Mosside area of North Antrim.

The local MLA said, ‘This was a terrifying attack perpetrated against two pensioners and my thoughts are with them as they seek to come to terms with their ordeal.

Whilst such attacks are thankfully relatively rare, there is a real fear amongst many older people who feel vulnerable even in their home. It is vital that not only are those responsible identified, but that sentences are handed down to those convicted of such crimes which reflect the serious nature of the offence.

Proposals have previously been brought to the Assembly for tougher sentences for those convicted of attacking older people. As a society we must demonstrate that we value our older people and anyone carrying out such an attack will receive a tough sentence.’
