Claire Sugden MLA has given her support to the MS Society’s End The Wait campaign to improve services for people suffering with Multiple Sclerosis
The East Londonderry MLA said: “I fully support the #EndTheWait campaign by the MS Society to improve services for those living with Multiple Sclerosis.
Of the 4000 people living with MS in Northern Ireland, a disproportionate number are within the Northern Trust. Access to good health provision has been an ongoing fight. Last year I worked with the MS Society in Coleraine to lobby for a Consultant Neurologist. They still require specialist MS Nurses, something I have questioned the Minister about.
I have been in contact with MS patients in my constituency who are concerned about the inadequate care. Living with MS presents daily battles for patients. They shouldn’t feel like their health is undervalued.
It is not good enough that patients face a wait of up to 18 weeks for their first appointment with a Neurologist. Many do not receive a check-up within the recommended time following this. MS is a progressive illness and I am concerned that patients are not receiving the regular healthcare they need.
Patient outcomes need to improve and the wait for MS services must be slashed. I am backing the #EndTheWait campaign in support of addressing these issues with a sense of urgency.”
