Sugden concerned about impact of Taxis Legislation on Wedding Cars

1 Mins read

Claire Sugden MLA has expressed her concern over the impact that new Taxis Legislation will have on Wedding Cars in her Constituency of East Londonderry.

Miss Sugden said : “I am concerned about the impact of new taxis legislation on wedding car companies in my constituency.

I have been contacted by companies who are concerned at the potential damage the Taxis Act will do to their businesses from May.

There have been a number of issues with this Bill. Wedding car companies were not included in the initial consultation because the Department didn’t realise that it would impact them to this extent. They are exempt from the Taxis Act in the rest of the UK, putting Northern Ireland out of sync with UK legislation.

For this Bill all vehicle hire companies, including wedding car firms, were included under Public Hire Services. There are clearly differences between special occasion hire and hiring a taxi for day to day use.

The Minister has been made aware of the issues with his Bill. I am disappointed that he is passing this back to the DVA. It is not up to them to change the law and he needs to take responsibility. This Bill will make business very difficult for wedding car companies.

I have asked the Department for clarity on this issue and will be following this up.”
