Claire Sugden MLA has welcomed the awarding of a £12million contract to begin construction of the new headquarters for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Ballykelly.
MLA Sugden said : “I welcome the news that a £12million contract has been awarded to start work on the new Department of Agriculture headquarters in Ballykelly.
The contract, awarded to JH Turkington and Sons, is another step towards bringing Government headquarters into the countryside for the first time. It makes sense to bring Agriculture to an area with strong rural roots.
This is part of the ongoing development of the Shackleton site. With construction work set to begin in July, I welcome the jobs that this phase will bring.
The total development of the Shackleton site is needed sooner rather than later. I urge the Executive to ensure that work on the whole site gets under way as soon as possible to maximise benefits for the whole area.
The North West has suffered in recent years. People have been overlooked by the Government. Shackleton is an asset which could bring a much needed boost to the local economy.
I have spoken to the community in Ballykelly and they welcome the work. I hope that progress will be supported by all political parties. We need collective will to make the most of this significant opportunity.”
