Claire Sugden MLA has welcomed today’s launch of a £30million Transformation fund by Health Mnister Simon Hamilton.
The East Londonderry MLA said: “I welcome the launch of the Transformation Fund by the Health Minister. It aims to improve service delivery, encourage innovation and invest in facilities.
I am pleased that an initial slice of funding will aim to promote medicines management by improving their use and addressing wastage.
Medicines cost our health service £550million every year and it is concerning that £18million of this is wasted. Up to half of those with long term conditions do not take their medicines as prescribed. Investment in medicines management has been needed for some time.
Medicines wastage has been raised with me before and I have relayed my concerns to the Department. I am pleased that they recognise the need to address this. Savings could be redirected to other frontline services which need investment.
This is another piece in the ongoing process to restructure our health service. I hope it will deliver practical outcomes for people on the ground.
We have a very hardworking health workforce who need supported so that we can achieve the world class health service Northern Ireland deserves. I hope this is another step towards this.”
