Claire Sugden MLA has welcomed the Education Minister’s announcement regarding the future of three schools in Coleraine and Portstewart.
MLA Sugden said: “I welcome Tuesday’s announcement regarding the future of Loreto, Dominican and St. Joseph’s schools.
Approved proposals include expanding Dominican College and Loreto, and the phased closure of St Joseph’s over two years from this September.
I have been contacted by schools and parents who have been left waiting for this information. P7 pupils need to be able to make informed decisions about their post-primary education in September.
I’ve been putting pressure on the Minister for too long to make this decision. It has been a long 48 hours since he assured me this information would be available.
I am pleased that parents, pupils and staff at primary and post primary schools can finally move forward without unnecessary uncertainty for the 2016/17 transfer process.
This decision is part of an ongoing process to re-structure post-primary education. All of the changes must be strategically thought out and properly resourced so that the needs of all of our young people are met.”
