Sugden welcomes Review of Business Rates

1 Mins read

Claire Sugden MLA has welcomed the review of the business rates system in Northern Ireland.

Miss Sugden said:

“I welcome the review of the business rates system. The current process for non-domestic rates is unfair and deeply flawed leading to significant rates bills for local businesses. I have been pushing the Minister for Finance for reform of the system for some time, so I am pleased she is finally seeing sense towards fixing problems which will support the local economy and small businesses.”

“While we are now moving in the right direction a business rates review is long overdue. Many local businesses have suffered from the 2015 non-domestic rates revaluation with some being forced to close. I will continue to work with local businesses to appeal their rates bills, but a new system must be implemented as soon as possible so businesses do not face an annual nightmare.”

“The NI government needs to consider alternative forms of taxation to replace or supplement the existing system. They should also listen to the business community’s response to any proposed changes. They are central to this process and will be the reason for high streets thriving again.”

“This is an important review and all views are welcomed particularly from the businesses community. I will be submitting a response, so I encourage constituents to get in touch with me to share their views.”

“I am also happy to assist anyone in submitting their own response. Please contact me on 028 7032 7294 or [email protected]
