Coleraine Ulster Unionist councillor William McCandless has condemned the attack on buses returning from Monday’s Twelfth of July celebrations in Coleraine, as they passed through the village of Greysteel.
Councillor McCandless said; “It is regrettable that Orangemen and supporters were singled out for sectarian attack on their way home from the Twelfth demonstration in Coleraine on 13th July. “Unfortunately this is not the first time this sort of behaviour has occurred in the village and this sort of senseless attack on a bus could have led to a serious incident.
We are fortunate that we are not discussing major fatalities today. “Community activists, community leaders and the community in general in Greysteel need to engage with young people in the area to discourage such reprehensible behaviour whereby the actions of a few serves to damage the reputation of the many.
“It is extremely disappointing that what was otherwise a hugely successful day in Coleraine should be marred by this incident and I would ask that for future loyal order parades a police presence should be in Greysteel to ensure that people seeking to travel through the area are not subjected to attack.”
