Action needed on virus threat – Campbell

1 Mins read
BT Coleraine

East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell has raised the issue of visitors from some of the Counties in the Irish Republic currently under localised lockdown being in the Causeway Coast area in the past week.

“Following reports of cars with registrations from the affected Counties in the Republic I wrote to the Irish Government, as it is principally a matter for them given that in all probability the car owners are residents from those areas and it is the Republics’ Government that introduced the travel restrictions to residents in those areas where the number of covid infections appear to have risen. In addition I have also written to the Local Police Commander in Coleraine indicating the nature of the problem to ascertain how local Police intend to try and deal with a potential problem which has potential but obvious cross border implications.

Given that there is now a further week of August when both holidaymakers and those taking advantage of the Chancellors ‘Eat out to Help out’ half price dining offer it is fairly certain that there will be more visitors in the area and while visitors are usually most welcome there must be extreme vigilance taken to combat the threat of further rises in rates of the virus.”
