A Coleraine man who stole £100 worth of alcohol from a Ballymoney shop was “emboldened” by his success and returned the next day to steal bottles of spirits worth £400.

William Desmond McLaughlin (30), of Somerset Drive, struck last April and the alcohol was not recovered, the Magistrates Court in Coleraine was told on January 21. Defence solicitor Garrett Greene said the unemployed father of three had alcohol difficulties.

The lawyer said another person was also charged in relation to the incidents and a bench warrant had been issued for their arrest. Mr Greene claimed McLaughlin played a lesser role.

District Judge Liam McNally said the defendant had stolen alcohol and “emboldened by your success” went back the next day. McLaughlin was given a four months jail term, suspended for two years, and ordered to pay compensation of £500.
