Alliance shock at Riverside Theatre Cuts

1 Mins read

Alderman Yvonne Boyle expressed shock at the 10% cuts to the Causeway Council Grant to the Riverside Theatre voted through at last week’s full Council meeting.

A former member of the Coleraine Council Riverside Theatre Management Committee, she said:
‘I support the Council’s focus on reducing our overall current debt and welcome the setting up of a financial subcommittee looking at measures, infrastructure and more efficient monitoring.

However, this cut to local arts provision is a false economy. There are issues that can be explored through the arts and drama which cannot easily be explored elsewhere for our sense of identity and our quality of life in this area. If short-sighted cuts result in the loss of that, it cannot easily be recaptured.

Council will also be looking at the Riverside Theatre again before the rates are set next year. I therefore urgently appeal to everyone who has been to the Riverside, those children and family members are involved in the many local productions, and everyone who care about the arts, to write to your local Councillor about your concern. It was not a unanimous vote and your actions can help ensure the theatre’s ongoing survival.’
