Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has appealed for information following a spate of vandalism at the Diversity Park in Portstewart.

In the latest incident, an attempt was made to set fire to one of the pieces of play equipment. It left scorch damage on the aero glider, which is a one-of-its-kind piece aimed specifically at wheelchair users.

Bottles have also been smashed in the park, leaving dangerous shards of glass on the ground, while plants have been pulled out and destroyed.

Speaking about the damage, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Alderman Maura Hickey said: “The Diversity Park draws visitors from all over, and we are fortunate to have such a facility in our Borough.

It is extremely disheartening to hear that it has been the subject of numerous attacks, and that equipment which is there for everyone to enjoy is being destroyed.

I want to urge everyone to act as guardians of the park – if you see someone causing damage or acting suspiciously please contact Police immediately so this behaviour can be stopped.

However, I also want to appeal to those carrying out these attacks – what are you trying to achieve? This park was created with a vision in mind to bring all children together, regardless of disability. Attacks like this are harming some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Please think twice about the consequences of your actions, and those people you are affecting the most.”

Anyone with information about the ongoing vandalism at the park is urged to contact Police by ringing 101.
