Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald commenting on the decision by Martin McGuinness not to stand in the Assembly election said:

“Martin McGuinness has been to the forefront of peace and reconciliation efforts over the past 20 years. We owe him a debt of gratitude for the great leadership he has shown in endeavouring to ensure a better future for all the people of the north.

“I wish Martin the very best in his recovery and there is no doubt in my mind once well, he will continue to play a significant role in Sinn Féin and in continued efforts of reconciliation and peacebuilding.

“We now face a very significant election.

“There needs to be true equality for all sections of our society. We must challenge bigotry, arrogance and potential corruption that holds progress back.

“The people of the North will now have their say.”
