Ballycastle Sinn Féin Councillor, Cara McShane, has welcomed Council’s support for her proposal to take budget powers from Directors within Council with regards public spend on service provision

Ballycastle Sinn Féin Councillor, Cara McShane, has welcomed Council’s support for her proposal to take budget powers from Directors within Causeway Coast and Glens Council with regards public spend on service provision.

Previously senior Directors of the Council had the power to move budgets around or spend up to £10,000 without first bringing to the Council for a decision.

Sinn Féin Councillor, Cara McShane, said:

“Council is a democratic body and Councillors are the democratic authority. We are accountable to ratepayers. It is important, particularly given previous problems with finance in the Council, that Councillors are the final authority on how ratepayers money is spent.

“Handing over decision-making of spends of up to £10,000 has been a problem in Causeway Coast and Glens since its inception.

“This decision tonight transfers powers back to all 40 Councillors, who are elected by the public to hold the public purse to account.”
