Ballymoney bricklayer is banned from the road for 15 months

1 Mins read

A BALLYMONEY bricklayer has been banned from the road for 15 months and fined £400 after pleading guilty to two charges of failing to provide a breath specimen.
Jordon Hughes, of Park View, appeared before Coleraine Magistrates Court on July 8.

The court heard how 28-year-old Hughes had been detected after police were called to a road collision in Portstewart on March 4 this year.

They spotted a car lying in a ditch and spoke to Hughes, who had been behind the wheel. Officers smelled intoxicating liquor and Hughes “struggled to engage” with them. He refused to provide a preliminary breath test or an evidential sample.

In his defence, the court was told that Hughes had no record and admitted being under the influence at the time.

The defence lawyer said Hughes had failed to give a sample at the scene because he thought he would be able to get “some legal assistance at the roadside – which wasn’t tenable”.

District Judge Liam McNally certified the defendant for the drink-driving course and told Hughes he would have to re-sit his test.
