Banned Driver Who Once Said ‘voices In His Head’ Made Him Get Behind The Wheel Has Been Caught On The Road Again And Then Tried To Climb Out Of The Window Of A Moving Police Car

A banned driver who has frequently flouted his disqualifications and once said “voices in his head” told him to drive to a McDonald’s restaurant in the middle of the night has been caught behind the wheel again and after being arrested he tried to escape from a moving police car.

The latest case being faced by Gary Ryan Hill (29), of Linenhall Street in Ballymena, involved him driving a car erratically near Ballymoney and then the defendant and two other males were spotted fighting in a lay-by.
Hill was arrested and on his way to Coleraine Police Station he twice punched the rear window of a police car and as the vehicle slowed down he wound down the window and tried to climb out, a prosecutor, told Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday.

Hill has pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified; taking a Peugeot 307 without authority; absence of insurance and attempted criminal damage to a PSNI vehicle.

The offences happened on August 30 this year.

In a previous case at Ballymena Magistrates Court in early August, Hill had been given a five months jail term, suspended for two years, and was banned from driving for five years. That court heard that Hill was an already disqualified driver who said he got back behind the wheel to go to McDonald’s in Ballymena in the middle of the night because, a prosecutor had outlined, “the voices in his head told him to”.

A previous court heard the defendant had over 80 convictions including around 50 for traffic offences.

At Monday’s Court in Coleraine, District Judge Peter King said he was adjourning sentencing until the end of October to allow reports to be prepared.

He warned the defendant that jail was likely.
