Banned driver with Portstewart address claimed he was using friend’s car to nip to 24 hour garage

A MAN caught driving whilst disqualifed and using a Vauxhall Mokka without insurance at North Road in Ballymena said the vehicle belonged to a friend and he had borrowed it to go to a 24 hour garage.

Luke Goligher (22), formerly with an address at Lanntara in Ballymena but now given as Old Coach Road in Portstewart, committed the offences on February 26 this year.
He was being sentenced on charges of driving whilst disqualified and using a vehicle without insurance.

At Ballymena Magistrates Court, a prosecutor said at 2.30am on the date in question police observed a vehicle parked in the North Road area of Ballymena and after checks were performed police went to speak to the driver but the vehicle was gone.

A short time later it was spotted at a petrol pump at Maxol garage at North Road where the defendant admitted to police he had no insurance or licence and when the driving ban came to light he said he believed his period of disqualification was up.

Defence solicitor Stewart Ballentine said the vehicle belonged to a friend of the defendant who borrowed the car to go a short distance to the 24-hour garage.
The defendant was given a three months prison term, suspended for a year, and banned from driving for six months.
