Beckett backs Bannsiders

Radio pundit and former Coleraine player Liam Beckett believes Oran Kearney’s side can cause a shock in Thursday’s Europa League first qualifying round tie in Slovenia.

The Bannsiders will be up against it against NK Maribor.

But Beckett, who starred in one of the club’s best ever away results – a 2 2 Cup Winners’ Cup draw with Locomotive Leipzig in East Germany in 1977, thinks the current squad can stun the Slovenian’s.

“It’s not beyond Coleraine to pull off a result,” said the BBC radio commentator.

“I see a togetherness in this team and players playing with smiles on their faces.

“Oran will have left no stone unturned in his preparation. There’s a nice solid look to the team and a goal threat too.”

The game is at a completely different level to when Beckett represented the Bannsiders in Europe.

“We never knew anything about the teams we played. Now clubs have video analysis etc.

“Anything is possible and I genuinely am full of hope that Coleraine can pull off a great result on Thursday.”)
