Police in Coleraine confirmed this morning that a teenage boy died following a road traffic collision at Newbridge Road yesterday evening, Saturday 26th November.

The boy was struck by a white coloured car at around 6.30pm. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The white car failed to stop at the scene of the collision and was located in the Magherafelt area several hours later following police enquiries. A 23 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and a number of other offences. He remains in police custody this morning.

D/Sgt Wallace has appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision or who has any information to contact police in Coleraine or officers at the Collision Investigation Unit on 101.

The 13 year old has been named locally as Reece Meenan. It is understood the teenager was a pupil at Loreto College in Coleraine.

Caoimhe Archibald MLA said, “This is a nightmare for any family to deal with, I would like to express my utmost sympathy to the family and friends of the young boy at this terrible time.

“Any death on our roads is one too many and a tragedy for all those involved. I would appeal to all road users to exercise care especially at this time of year.
