Improvements to the layout to the Ballycastle Road roundabout has been cautiously welcomed by MLA Maurice Bradley.
The Department for Infrastructure has revealed that work has commenced at the roundabout in a bit to increase capacity at the junction and to improve the road surface.
It is hoped that the scheme will increase the throughput of traffic during peak hours, however, MLA Bradley says that the improvements may have a detrimental effect on those trying to exit or access the Grasmere development.
“I have been pressing DFI since I was elected over two years ago to have a look at the junction at the Grasmere development.
“If the traffic coming off the Ballycastle Road roundabout is flowing more freely it may result in less breaks in traffic flow.
“This means that those trying to get in or out of Grasmere will find it even more difficult than normal.
“I know that some drivers can sit at the junction for several minutes before getting a safe passage across the carriageway.
“I am continually getting calls and messages about accidents and near misses at Grasmere and I would urge DFI to have another look at this junction whilst they are carrying out work in the area
“In an ideal world what we need at Grasmere is traffic lights similar to that at the Newmills Road junction,” said the MLA.
