MLA Maurice Bradley has thanked NI Water for accommodating a meeting at Ballinrees Reservoir on the outskirts of Coleraine this morning (Thursday).
Political representatives and users of the scenic site were invited to speak with NI Water representatives about the closure of the car park.
MLA Bradley said: “I would like to thank NI Water for the meeting,” said Bradley.
“The closure of this car park has been met with an outcry by members of the public who use the site daily.
“Even after the car park was closed, my office is continuing to receive calls. It is my understanding that members of the public are continuing to use the site, and therein lies the problem – there is no safe place to park other than the car park, so people are putting their lives at risk in order to gain access to the site.
“At today’s meeting members of the public were given the opportunity to put their views across and as a result, NI Water has agreed to seek legal action into the possible reopening of the car park until a resolution is found.
“They will now enter into discussions with Council and DfI with a view to finding a way forward.
“It is my view that people power had its say today – I think that NI Water now realises that Ballinrees is an asset to our area.
“Our Councils through community planning is being encouraged to open up spaces for leisure purposes, here we have an excellent facility that is being denied to members of the public.
“I am hopeful that a resolution can be found,” concluded Bradley.
