DUP MLA Maurice Bradley, a member of Stormont’s Education committee has welcomed news that a hardship fund will be initiated for substitute teachers.
Bradley said: “Following representations from all members of the Education Committee, the Department was acutely aware of the concerns of the substitute teaching workforce, who no longer have access to employment.
“Substitute teachers play a vital role in the education of our children and young people and it was unfair to leave them with no income at this time.
“I have had many from the Coleraine area in touch with me and my office and I know the pressure they some have been under to pay bills with no income. This fund is good news,” said Bradley.
Education Minister Peter Weir said he was delighted to announce a resolution for the substitute teachers disputes in NI “in terms of a £12m fund.”
“I welcome the Executive’s announcement today. That’s another Covid-19 loop-hole taken care of.”
