‘Brazen Theft’ At Coleraine Mobile Phone Stores

A man from Dublin and two teenagers have admitted stealing mobile phones worth £3,400 in brazen snatch raids on shops in Coleraine.

The trio pleaded guilty to taking phones on Saturday December 29 from two Carphone Warehouse outlets.

At Coleraine Magistrates Court they each pleaded guilty to two charges of theft and a third charge of going equipped for theft with pliers.

Daniel Calvin Spirache (19), of Annfield Court in Dublin, was given a two months jail term, suspended for two years. The two teenage boys – aged 16 and 17 who cannot be named because of their ages – had their cases adjourned.

A defence lawyer said the trio were of “Romanian heritage”. A prosecution lawyer said three males entered Carphone Warehouse at Church Street in Coleraine and took three iPhones which had been on display.

Later the security wire was cut and a phone stolen from another Carphone Warehouse outlet in Coleraine. During the second incident, two males ran out to a black Mercedes.

A car was later stopped in nearby Limavady and the vehicle was seized by police.

Four phones were recovered and a pair of pliers found.

The youths were released on £100 bail each to appear at Coleraine Youth Court later this month.
