Cannabis fell from prisoner’s underwear

1 Mins read

CANNABIS fell from a man’s underwear after he was noticed to be under the influence in a prison cell, a court heard.

Gerard Anthony McCrory was caught with drugs at Magilligan Prison.

The defendant (36), with an address at the Falls Road in Belfast, appeared before Coleraine Magistrates Court on January 13 via video link from prison.

He pleaded guilty to possessing Diazepam, cannabis and herbal cannabis at Magilligan prison on June 29, 2018.

The court heard how McCrory had returned to the jail following home leave.

Prison officers who entered his cell found him under the influence of drugs and he handed them cannabis.

When McCrory’s underwear was removed another block of cannabis fell to the floor and tablets were also recovered.

In his defence, the court was told that McCrory had made full admissions.

The defence lawyer said there was a “very difficult background” to the defendant who had a personality disorder and post-traumatic stress.

The court heard McCrory was substituting a heroin addiction with cannabis and had “ran up a significant debt”.

He had also suffered a number of overdoses.

McCrory received a three-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

District Judge Peter King said an aggravating feature was that drugs were uncovered in prison.
