Sinn Féin have welcomed the decision by the Minister for Infrastructure, Chris Hazzard, not to abandon Carrickmore Road, Ballycastle.

Sinn Féin MLA, Philip McGuigan, and Ballycastle Sinn Féin Councillor, Cara McShane have been vocal opponents of the abandonment of the road and have both said that the Minister’s decision not to accede to a request by a developer is the right decision and in the greater public interest.

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA, Philip McGuigan, who had written to the Minister on the subject said:

“The application by a private developer, requesting that Transport NI (formerly Roads Service) should abandon a section of the Carrickmore Road, infuriated the local community and specific interest groups across this constituency.

“The section of road passes through an area of significant local and historic interest and is used by many local walkers and joggers. Many people rightly feel aggrieved at how this situation has been handled by the previous Minister and that the interests of a few were being pitched against the community. I am delighted with this news.

Cllr Cara McShane added:

“While Minister Hazzard is only recently in post, his DUP predecessor had this on her desk for a considerable length of time and although she visited the site several months ago, no decision was taken. Indeed, despite many representations over the years and a packed public meeting in January last year, the Department seemed to have been dragging its feet, with little communication on progress.

“In order to restore public confidence and to bring closure to this case, it was imperative that the new Minister made a decision swiftly and one that was in the interests of this community. I am delighted that Minister Hazzard has now made that decision. More importantly the community who use this road will be delighted.
