Castlerock Man Said He ‘Didn’t Wish To Waste Court’s Time’

Coleraine Courthouse

A Castlerock man who pleaded guilty to a number of driving charges said he “didn’t want to waste the court’s time” and District Judge Liam McNally replied: “I wish everybody took that attitude”.

Mark Jonathan Hutchinson (41), of Clifton Terrace, admitted driving with excess alcohol in his blood at Seacoast Road at Castlerock and absence of insurance, MOT and a licence.

The offences were detected on the afternoon of October 15, 2018, when he was driving an Alfa Romeo.
At Coleraine Magistrates Court on Friday December 28, a police officer said she believed she could connect the accused to the charges.

The court heard the defendant could “not get” himself a solicitor in Coleraine over the Christmas period.
He told the court he could have obtained a barrister from Belfast at a cost of “£200 a day” but he couldn’t afford it as he was getting Employment and Support Allowance.

The defendant said he wished to plead guilty anyhow. A prosecutor said the defendant had a blood/alcohol reading of 96 – the legal limit being 80 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

The defendant was banned from driving for a year; fined £200 and given a two year conditional discharge.
