EAST Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden has prompted a review into the further education grading process in Northern Ireland.
The MLA urged senior civil servants in the Department for the Economy to examine the process, not just for this year, but for previous years, in order to ascertain whether it was fit for purpose.
Officials in the department agreed to carry out a review after Ms Sugden raised the issue at Wednesday’s meeting of the economy committee.
“BTec students had the publication of their grades delayed at the last minute, potentially putting them at a disadvantage when it comes to applying for further courses or employment opportunities,” she said.
“Constituents have also contacted me to report dissatisfaction with the process in previous years.
“It is a good opportunity to comprehensively review the grading process and I welcome the commitment of the Department of the Economy to doing so.
“Those studying in further education, and those doing practical courses, shouldn’t be left behind. They should be no less of a priority than their peers studying in other areas.”
