Claire Sugden MLA Cautiously Welcomes Additional Funding For Health And Social Care

‘I welcome the news that extra funding has been allocated to health and social care in Northern Ireland. Whilst I am pleased that the proposed cuts are no longer going ahead, I think it is unfair that so many people have been put through this period of unnecessary anxiety and distress. Even before cuts were announced, the growing strain on our local services was clear to see, and this extra money does not deal with that. People are still struggling to get appointments with GPs, waiting years for surgeries and services are being cut when they need to be developed.

The pattern of uncertainty across all of our public services is unfair to everyone, but most of all those most in need of help. Our health and social care services are supposed to provide help when we need it most, yet they are the services being targeted most. Whether a patient or an employee, not knowing what help you are going to have access to or if you’ll have a job from one month to the next is worrying to say the least.

We need an Executive now to show leadership in order to avoid situations like this occurring again and give people some much needed stability. People need reassurance about how funds are allocated within our Trusts and an assurance that our Health service is going to get the overhaul it so badly needs. ’
