During a special council meeting last night ( Thursday 22nd June 2017 ) councillors unanimously honoured the ‘Freedom Of The Borough’ to North West 200 race director Mervyn Whyte MBE.
In a statement to Causeway Coast Community this afternoon Claire Sugden MLA said :
‘I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Mervyn Whyte MBE on being granted Freedom of the Borough. This is a great honour, and one which he most thoroughly deserves.
Mervyn has worked tirelessly for many years and overcome a lot of adversity to make the NW200 the success that it is.
I was delighted to attend this year’s event and witness first-hand the culmination of so much hard work throughout the year. The event takes such a high level of organisation and the responsibility Mervyn has held on his shoulders for so long is immense, with the safety of the event being his primary focus.
Mervyn has fought tirelessly for funding to improve safety measures on the course and works closely with riders to ensure they have everything they need to enjoy a safe week’s racing.
Mervyn’s contribution is to much more than the event itself. Road racing is a sport enjoyed by millions across the world. This event brings so many visitors to our area and plays a major role in supporting businesses in this constituency.
I hope that Mervyn will get to take some time to celebrate and reflect on his incredible achievements whilst preparations for next year’s event get underway.’
