Submitting her nomination papers today to stand as a candidate in the forthcoming Assembly Election, Claire Sugden said
”The support from local people, who have contacted me asking me to stand again has been overwhelming. It has further convinced me that people in this area want a strong independent voice, speaking up for them in the Assembly.”
“Last May I asked, the people of East Londonderry to vote for me and you did. In the short time since, I have proven that I am your most successful and capable MLA and that Independents represent change, forward thinking & work done.
I never envisaged that less than a year later I would be asking you to vote once more. People are angry because yet again the parties have put political infighting ahead of the people they promised to represent. I stand Independent so I can put people first. Party MLAs are driven by their party; I am driven by people.
“People want a politician who will fight on the real issues that affect them in their daily lives. Better politics begins with better politicians. I address issues that matter to people because I listen and I know how. I am the new generation of politician both educated in politics and with ten years experience. I am not hindered by the past; I want to keep Northern Ireland moving forward. I am energised to fight for issues that matter to you and your family.”
“We are in this mess because the main parties put playing political games ahead of the needs of the people. Whichever community people are from they want politicians to work together to deliver what matters – jobs, the health service, education and housing. That’s what I stand for and why I am again seeking election as an independent candidate.
“My message to the people of East Londonderry is clear – don’t be disillusioned by the current situation. You hold the power to change things. Use that power – use your vote.”
Sugden’s Election Agent Colin McClarty said
“I have known Claire since she worked for my dad, David McClarty, she shares his values. She has proven she has integrity, is honest and works hard for the people of East Londonderry. I know he would be so proud of her. Now, more than ever, we need independent voices in Stormont, putting people first. The McClarty family support Claire – I ask the people of East Londonderry to get behind her and support her too.”
